Jamaican organizations will have the opportunity to dramatically improve their competitiveness through the introduction of web technologies in their operations. An international alliance led by the International Institute for Communication and Development (IICD - The Netherlands) and including the National Commission on Science and Technology; Jamaica Computer Society Education
Foundation (JCSEF); Caribbean Institute of Technology (CIT) and INFOSERV Institute of Technology will present a two-day Technical Update Seminar on "Dynamic Databases, e-Commerce and the WWW" at the Jamaica Conference Centre and the CIT/INFOSERV lab on November 21 & 22.
The seminar has been carefully crafted to provide organizations of any size with a practical framework and tool-kit for integrating the power of databases into their use of the World Wide Web. The highly interactive workshop will have high impact on processes that seek to present their information via the Internet as well as their critical information seeking activities.
The IICD promotes economic development in a select group of countries through promotion of the use of Information and Communications Technologies (ICT). Jamaican projects receiving direct support under the programme include the Caribbeat Music Expo, the Agricultural Business Information System (ABIS), Central and Satellite Agriculture Information Centres (CSAIC), the Instructional Technology Institute (ITI), the Portmore Municipal Development Committee (PMDC) and the Global Teenager Project.
The workshop will focus on giving participants a fundamental understanding of solutions that integrate database and web technologies. Organizations will leave with the ability to compare and analyse a variety of current technologies. They will also receive a blueprint for developing their own web-based solutions, including information on costs and locally available resources. The sessions lead to the actual hands-on development of prototypes on the second day. A key feature of the seminar
will be real life Jamaican case studies that lay bare pitfalls, challenges and opportunities from the perspective of entities that have implemented web-based strategies.
The seminar is geared to decision-makers with responsibility for the Information and Communications Technology thrust of their organizations. It will add value to entities in the public and private sectors and to NGOs. The package of 'how to' solutions will also provide a clear roadmap for professionals charged with the implementation of ICT strategies. Of great importance also is the opportunity for networking with other organizations and potential solution providers that the seminar will
afford.
Registration is in full swing through the INFOSERV INSTITUTE OF TECHNOLOGY - E-mail: infoserv@cwjamaica.com or 960-7530, 929-3179. There is a registration fee of J$500 for Day 1 at the Conference Centre and J$1000 for the hands-on prototype session on Day 2 in the CIT/INFOSERV Institute lab. Contact: Kamla Hamilton/Trevor Smith
